Married man becomes priest in New York

WELLSVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A married man took a rite of ordination in New York, becoming the state's first married Catholic priest.

John Cornelius, 64, a father of three and a former Episcopal priest, took a vow of chastity Saturday before Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone in Wellsville, New York Daily News reported.

Cornelius' wife of 33 years, Sharyl, gave her blessing to his switch from Episcopalian to Catholicism, even though the couple will now give up sexual relations.

Cornelius said his mission in life has changed.

"I've raised three girls already," the new priest said, adding that sex is meant for procreation.
