The gunfire came after two men on the suburban Houston campus became involved in an argument Tuesday morning. One fired a handgun and wounded the other man and a maintenance worker, while panicked students dove for cover amid fears of a shooting spree, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The fears quickly subsided, but not before police and emergency vehicles converged on the school, tending to the wounded and launching a search for the gunman, the newspaper said, adding the campus was later reopened and four nearby schools in the Aldine Independent School District, also locked down as a precaution, were reopened.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday the alleged suspect, Carlton Berry, 22, walked into a local hospital with an apparent and accidental self-inflicted gunshot to his hip, authorities said.
Although he remains hospitalized, Berry was charged with aggravated assault, Harris County, Texas, Sheriff's Department said, adding the other man in the altercation remained under armed guard in a separate hospital.
No information was offered on the condition of the injured maintenance worker.
