Nanny faces murder charge in child's death

BOSTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- An Irish nanny in the United States illegally could face a murder charge in the death of a 1-year-old Massachusetts girl in her care, officials say.

Aisling McCarthy Brady, 34, has been arraigned on a charge of assaulting Rehma Sabir, who died last week, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

The Middlesex District Attorney's Office said Brady was expected to be charged with murder after completion of an autopsy on the toddler.

The child was diagnosed with "massive brain swelling" after Brady allegedly attacked her Jan. 14 at an apartment in Cambridge, The Boston Herald reported.

Sabir died two days later.

Medical tests also showed the child had fractures on her left arm that were healing and a compression fracture of her vertebrae, along with bruising on her scalp and buttocks, said Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Katharine Folger.

Brady has pleaded not guilty to assault and battery on a child with substantial injuries. She is being held on $500,000 bond.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Brady entered the U.S. in 2002 on a 90-day visa and never left.

Records indicate the nanny has had a series of run-ins with the law since she arrived, the reports said. Two restraining orders have been issued against her. An assault charge was dismissed.
