FLEMINGTON, N.J., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A two-alarm barn fire killed 48 sheep on a farm in Hunterdon County, N.J., near the Pennsylvania state line, state police said.

The fire on the farm in Alexandria Township, N.J., began around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday and quickly engulfed the barn and the animals inside, State Trooper Anthony Wolcott said.

Three local fire departments brought the fire under control by dawn, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

State police are investigating the cause of the fire, but Wolcott said it does not appear to be suspicious.
