Nanny arrested in baby's death

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Massachusetts have arrested a 34-year-old nanny in the death of a baby in her care, the Middlesex district attorney's office said.

Aisling McCarthy Brady is accused of violently assaulting a 1-year-old Cambridge girl and inflicting severe head injuries that ultimately led to her death, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

"This is an extremely troubling case, where we allege the defendant violently assaulted a 1-year-old child, causing a devastating head injury and broken bones," District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said in a statement.

The baby, whose identity was not revealed, was found unresponsive but breathing by police Jan. 14 and taken to Boston Children's Hospital.

Doctors there determined she was suffering from subdural and retinal hemorrhaging and swelling of the brain. She died two days later.

Kristen Collins, 19, an upstairs neighbor of the suspect, told the Boston Herald Brady was a native of Ireland.

Prosecutors said Brady will probably face further charges once the medical examiner has submitted a final report.
