ROCK HILL, S.C., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- South Carolina's Winthrop University says it has suspended the school's chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity over allegations of hazing.

Winthrop said it found evidence that Alpha Phi Alpha members were "engaging in verbal hazing and other prohibited practices," university officials said Friday.

The fraternity is banned from using university resources, holding events on campus or reserving any of Winthrop's space while it is suspended, The Herald, Rock Hill, S.C., reported.

The university said campus police are in "continuing interviews" related to the alleged hazing incident.

The university said it was still trying to determine who was involved in the hazing, which under state law includes "unauthorized treatment ... of a subordinate student of a tyrannical, abusive, shameful, insulting, or humiliating nature."

State law provides for students found guilty of hazing to be "dismissed, expelled, suspended or punished."
