Holmes prosecutors want gag order lifted

AURORA, Colo., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Prosecutors asked the judge overseeing the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting case to lift the gag order so police can give training lectures on crisis response.

An attorney for the city of Aurora filed the motion Tuesday after prosecutors presented testimony and evidence last week against defendant James Holmes, The Denver Post reported Wednesday.

"Because extensive law enforcement testimony has now revealed the parameters of many details of the state's case against defendant, the city requests that this court consider whether its proscription against public extrajudicial statements by law enforcement ... is now moot," the document said.

The document requests that police officers who responded to the scene of the July 20 movie theater massacre be allowed to talk about the department's response to the shootings, the Post reported.

Officers have received numerous requests from other law enforcement agencies to give training lectures.

Holmes, 25, is charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder after opening fire at an Aurora theater's screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Twelve people died in the attack and 58 were wounded.
