Accused kidnapper guilty on ammo charge

COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- An accused kidnapper in South Carolina was convicted Tuesday on a federal charge of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

The jury in U.S. District Court in Columbia reached its verdict on Freddie Grant after a one-day trial Monday, The State reported. Sheriff's deputies described finding ammunition in his home in Elgin during their investigation of the disappearance of Gabrielle Swainson, 15, while Grant's daughter testified the ammunition belonged to her.

Grant has been charged with kidnapping Gabrielle, who disappeared last summer. Her mother had been his girlfriend.

He is also a suspect in the disappearance of Adrianna Laster, 28. She was living with him when she vanished in 2011.

Grant faces a possible life sentence on the ammunition charge. Prosecutors plan to argue he is a career criminal with a history of violence, seeking a longer sentence than the maximum 10 years on the charge.
