DALLAS, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The demolition of a Dallas apartment building that once housed presumed presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald began Monday, officials said.

A number of people showed up to watch the piece of history knocked to the ground. Some took photos or grabbed bricks as souvenirs, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Oswald, who authorities believe assassinated President John F. Kennedy in November 1963, and his family briefly lived at the former Elsbeth Court Apartments in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood that year.

The building was bought by Jane Bryant in 2007. At that time, she hoped to turn restore the apartments, but was told by City Hall the site no long was zoned for such use and had been vacant too long to continue as apartments.

After Bryant failed to comply with the city's requests that she bring the building up to code, a city judge in July 2011 ordered its demolition.
