INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A 19-year-old Indiana college student died when his car slid off the road and into a flooded field, authorities said.
His death came as flooded and icy roads created treacherous driving conditions in Indianapolis and surrounding areas, The Indianapolis Star reported Monday.
The identity of the Ball State University student, who drowned in high water in Grant County, was withheld pending notification of relatives.
Even though weather conditions had not closed any roads around Indianapolis Monday morning, freezing rain was expected to continue through the afternoon in the southeastern regions of the United States, Accuweather.com said.
The worst of the ice was forecast from northern Louisiana into southeast Arkansas and northern Mississippi. As much as a half inch of ice could glaze roads, and put strain on tree limbs and power lines, potentially leading to widespread power outages.
Freezing rain could also affect areas from western Tennessee into central Kentucky and southern Pennsylvania.
