Robbers posing as cops busted in NYC

NEW YORK, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration busted a heroin robbery team posing as police in the Bronx, law enforcement officials said.

NBC News said the crew planned to rob a heroin distribution ring Wednesday, but walked into a DEA sting instead.

The crew was armed with guns, fake police vests, shirts, ski masks and a police scanner, NBC News reported.

DEA agents infiltrated the Bronx gang and were able to arrest 16 individuals.

"As alleged, this was a marauding gang of armed and violent thieves in the Bronx who masqueraded as police officers in order to trick their narcotics-dealing targets so they could steal their drugs and their cash," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said.
