FAA warns of exploding coffee filters

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A Federal Aviation Administration safety alert warns several airlines and flight attendants have reported coffee filter packages bursting in flight.

NBC News said the packages have caused first and second-degree burns to crewmembers and bystanders.

In the warning issued last week, the FAA said the filters are susceptible to pressure buildup and may explode when the attendant lifts the coffee pot to pour a cup.

CNN said water can become blocked from dripping into the coffee pot below when a filter is placed incorrectly in the coffee maker.

Pressure then builds up within the container holding the filter and coffee grounds.

NBC News said the government is advising crews to make sure the packages are not folded and to only use one filter per pot.
