Police corruption suit settled for $3.5M

CAMDEN, N.J., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A $3.5 million settlement has been reached in a Camden, N.J., police corruption case, lawyers for 87 of the plaintiffs said.

The lawsuit alleged members of the department's anti-drug task force routinely fabricated evidence, lied in arrest reports and stole money from suspects and planted drugs on them. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office vacated sentences or dropped charges against 200 suspects in 2009 following an FBI investigation into corrupt practices on the force, The Philadelphia Inquirer said Wednesday.

The settlement was finalized Tuesday and all but one of the plaintiffs agreed to settle, lawyers said. Litigation in that individual's case may continue.
