Pa. woman charged for leaving child alone

UPPER DARBY, Pa., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania woman faces endangerment charges for allegedly going to New York and leaving her young daughter home alone, police said.

Shawn Kersey, 35, of Upper Darby was arrested last week after police responded to a well-being check and found the 6-year-old girl crying, the Delaware County Daily Dimes in Primos, Pa., reported Thursday.

Kersey, facing a felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child, is out on $40,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing Jan. 14.

"A neighbor heard the kid crying and, fortunately, the neighbor called police," police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. "It's dangerous to leave a child home alone. This is not to be tolerated, period."

The police report indicated Kersey admitted to leaving her daughter alone when she went on the trip Jan. 4. The report said the child told an officer her mother instructed her "to watch TV or go back to sleep and she would call me when I had to go to school and she put the phone beside me and left."

The child said she's been left by herself four times, police said.
