Four children killed in Georgia house fire

CONYERS, Ga., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Four children, ranging in age from 8 months to 7 years, were killed in a devastating house fire in Conyers, Ga., east of Atlanta, fire officials said.

Conyers Police Department official Mike Waters said two adults and a 5-year-old-boy escaped the blaze Tuesday, but the other children -- three boys and a girl -- were found inside the home and pronounced dead, WGCL-TV, Atlanta, reported Wednesday.

The children's grandmother was at the house when the fire broke out and was uninjured, fire officials said.

Four police officers arrived less than a minute after the call was made and entered the house with fire extinguishers, but were forced back out by the flames, Waters said.

The 5-year-old boy who survived was thrown from a second-story window by his mother, who also jumped to safety, WGCL said. The mother sustained severe burns, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
