UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A U.N. director mourned the death of Indian artist and writer Madanjeet Singh, a UNESCO goodwill ambassador since 2000.

Singh, an artist, philanthropist and diplomat from India, died Sunday of a stroke at age 88.

His "untiring efforts and personal commitment to fostering mutual understanding and peace have served as a great source of inspiration," said Irina Bokova in a statement. Bokova is director-general of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

In 1995 the agency created the Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence in his honor.
