N.J. lake searched, no one found

MORRISTOWN, N.J., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Emergency crews searched a partially frozen-over New Jersey lake Monday night after reports people fell in, but found no one, authorities said.

WABC-TV, New York, reported Mount Olive Township police initially said up to four people may have fallen through the ice on Budd Lake in Morris County, but The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported later authorities said two teenagers were reported missing.

Dive teams and boats searched for any victims without success as of 9 p.m. A report that one person had been pulled from the water was unfounded, the newspaper said.

WNBC-TV, New York, reported the search began after several 911 calls came in about 6:45 p.m. reporting someone screaming for help. One of the callers, William Hardy, told WNBC he went to the shore after hearing the screams and heard two voices and saw the glow of a cellphone, but the ice wasn't safe for him to reach them.
