Mass shooting suspect incompetent

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- One Goh, accused of killing seven people at a small college in Oakland, Calif., is currently incompetent to stand trial, a judge ruled Monday.

Judge Carrie Panetta suspended the criminal case against the 44-year-old former nursing student after receiving reports from two court-appointed psychiatrists who examined him and found him to be a paranoid schizophrenic, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Another hearing is set for Jan. 28, at which time Goh likely will be sent to Napa State Hospital, the newspaper said. Doctors at the psychiatric facility would try to restore him to competency through treatment and medication.

If he were to regain competency, Goh could still stand trial on murder and other charges.

"This is not about him trying to avoid responsibility," said Assistant Public Defender David Klaus, while noting his client had confessed to the April 12 shooting spree at Oikos University. "He's certainly a deeply troubled man. He's locked up in shame and remorse and sadness."

While authorities have said Goh had been delusional in the past and university employees have said he was angry about not having his tuition refunded after dropping out in November 2011, the motive for the shooting remains unclear, the Chronicle said.
