JERSEY CITY, N.J., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Four people were hurt when an escalator malfunctioned in a New Jersey subway station Monday morning, transit authorities said.
A spokesman for the Port Authority said none of the injuries were thought serious and those hurt were taken to area hospitals. The subway system reported no delays as a result, the Jersey Journal in Jersey City reported Monday.
Commuters appeared taken by surprise when the escalator that was supposed to take them up to street level instead began moving down, leading some to try walking against the moving stairs.
A video posted to YouTube shows people scurrying to get up the stairs as others bail off to a ledge on the side of the steps, or just give up and ride back down to the subway station. People can be heard yelling "Stop! Stop!"
A transit officer is seen assisting at least one woman who appeared injured at the bottom of the stairs.
