Chicago on pace to beat 2012 homicide rate

CHICAGO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Twelve people were killed in Chicago in the first six days of 2013, police say, setting up the possibility the city will beat last year's 516 homicides.

Chicago, which has been named "Murder City," had 10 killings in the same six days in 2012, WMAQ-TV, Chicago, reported Monday.

Detroit, which experienced a 20-year high in homicides last year, had only six killings in the first six days of 2013.

New York City, which has three times the population of Chicago, had 414 homicides last year.
