SHOW LOW, Ariz., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Three people were rescued after being stranded on thin ice covering a lake in Arizona, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to Fool Hollow Lake campground, near Show Low, Ariz., Wednesday afternoon to rescue the three after the ice they wandered onto began to break, Show Low Fire spokesman Brent Mix said.

Two of the three stayed in a dead tree, protruding from the lake, for two hours until their rescue, while the third scrambled to a snow-covered bank of the lake, Mix said.

He added the temperature was 27 degrees when the rescue began, and dropped to 22 degrees at the conclusion, the (Phoenix) Arizona Republic reported..

All three, unnamed but described as teenagers, were hospitalized for precautionary measures and mild hypothermia, authorities said.

The incident involved a total of 25 police and emergency personnel, the newspaper said.
