Airplane clips another on ground

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- No one was injured when one airplane clipped another while taxiing to a gate at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, law enforcement officials said.

Broward County Sheriff's officials said a Spirit Airlines Airbus A-320 struck a US Airways Airbus A-320 in a remote area away from the gate where the US Airways plane was parked overnight, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Misty Pinson said there were 162 people on board when the incident occurred Monday. She said the plane had been returned to service.

Pinson said the airline was investigating the matter but didn't say what caused the accident.

Airplane collisions on the ground occur "occasionally," Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spokesman Gregory Meyer told the Sun-Sentinel. "At FLL I would say we have aircraft-to-aircraft contact several times a year, usually minor damage."
