WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Utah Shooting Sports Council said it is holding a free class on concealed carry permits for those working in the education system.
The class, co-sponsored by local company OSPGEAR.com, is open to anyone actively employed by a private or public school, university or vocational school.
Utah law allows teachers and employees to carry concealed weapons on school property as long as they have permits.
The USSC said armed civilians on school grounds helped thwart a number of attacks at schools, including one at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs in 2007.
The USSC chairman, Clark Aposhian, will teach the class, named "Safe to Learn, Safe to Teach."
"The only reason to maintain the right for the law abiding to carry a firearm inside a school is if we are committed to and serious about protecting our children. " Aposhian said.
The class will take place today at 12 p.m. at the Maverick Center in West Valley City.
