High-rise prison escapee caught in Chicago

CHICAGO, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Bank robber Joseph Banks was captured two days after he used a bed-sheet rope to escape from prison on the 15th floor of a Chicago building, police said.

Banks, who escaped with cellmate Kenneth Conley from the high-rise Metropolitan Correctional Center in the South Loop Monday as they awaited sentencing, was arrested Thursday night in the Sheffield Neighbors neighborhood on the north side, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Banks and the other inmate used a rope made of sheets to shinny down the wall from a window on the 15th floor. They positioned clothing and sheets beneath blankets on their beds to make it appear as if they were in bed during nighttime checks. The makeshift rope was discovered Tuesday morning.

FBI agents and officers from the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and Chicago police were in on Banks' arrest.

Conley remained unaccounted for as of Friday morning, the Tribune said.
