Suspect arrested in Kutcher 'swatting'

Dec. 19, 2012 at 3:58 PM   |   Comments

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Police in Los Angeles say they arrested a juvenile suspected of making phony emergency reports to bring police to the homes of Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber.

The police department said it teamed with the FBI and police in Long Beach, Calif., to identify and arrest the suspect, whose name was not released, Dec. 10, CNN reported Wednesday.

Investigators said the Oct. 3 "swatting" -- computer hacker slang for making false reports of serious incidents in progress to bring large numbers of emergency responders to a location --at Kutcher's home involved a bogus report of shots fired and several people injured.

"The comments of the call advised that there were individuals inside the location with guns and explosives, and that several people had been shot," the police said.

A similar hoax took place a week later at Bieber's Calabasas, Calif., home, police said.

"The swatting practice is extremely dangerous and places first responders and citizens in harm's way," police said in a statement.
