SAN ANTONIO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Police in San Antonio said they shot and wounded a young gunman who allegedly stormed a restaurant and a theater while shooting, wounding a moviegoer.

The events unfolded Sunday night in and around the Santikos Mayan 14 theater, KSAT-TV, San Antonio, reported Monday.

Restaurant employee Jesus Manuel Garcia, 19, was hospitalized after a shooting spree prompted by his breakup with a girlfriend Sunday night. He lashed out by sending her a message he planned to go to the restaurant and "shoot somebody," Bexar County Sheriff's Sgt. Raymond Pollard said.

Garcia allegedly began shooting at the restaurant's front door, across a parking lot from the theater. He then went inside the restaurant, chasing patrons out a back door and shooting. When a police patrol car arrived Garcia allegedly shot out its windshield, shooting at, but not injuring, the police officer.

"He (Garcia) was shooting at a marked unit," Bexar County Sheriff Ronald Antu said. "He knows he was shooting at an officer so that's (an) automatic (charge of) attempted capital murder."

Garcia continued shooting he entered the theater and then a bathroom inside, the San Antonio, Texas, Express-News reported, adding one of the shots struck a movie patron in the back, but the bullet did not strike any vital organs. The victim was hospitalized and released.

An off-duty officer with the sheriff's department, whose name was not reported, shot and injured Garcia inside the bathroom. Garcia was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, the newspaper reported.

Pollard said Garcia will be charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated assault, adding more charges may come as police interview additional witnesses.
