BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A gunman was shot and killed by police at a hospital in Birmingham, Ala., early Saturday after he wounded three people, authorities said.

The man was ordered to leave St. Vincent's Hospital, where his wife was being treated, at 8 p.m. Friday, Al.com reported. He returned about 4 a.m. Saturday and made his way to the fifth floor.

Sgt. Johnny Williams, a spokesman for the Birmingham Police Department, said two officers responded to an emergency call.

"They engaged the suspect as they exited the elevator," he said. "The suspect opened fire on the officer. He wounded that officer and two other employees here at the hospital. The second responding officers returned gunfire, fatally wounding the suspect."

The man reportedly said he believed his wife was not receiving proper care at the hospital.

Police said the two hospital employees and the wounded officer were expected to recover. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was reviewing the shooting.
