SANFORD, Fla., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The makeshift memorial to Trayvon Martin has been moved from the Sanford, Fla., neighborhood where he was killed in February to a local historical society.

The memorial, comprised of crosses, flowers and messages delivered by mourners, was started on the side of the road where Martin was fatally shot. It was moved in July after Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte suggested the time had come to move forward, and that removal of the memorial would be a part of the healing process.

"It's a balance of being respectful to the Martin family and being respectful to the other Sanford residents living in that area," Bonaparte said.

The collection is now in the Goldsboro Historical Museum in Sanford, WESH-TV, Orlando, reported Friday.
