COLUMBIA, Ky., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A teenager was charged with assaulting ex-Marine Dakota Meyer, who won the Medal of Honor for heroism in Afghanistan, at an event in Kentucky, police said.

Meyer, 24, was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released after the weekend incident, CNN reported.

Police charged Kanissa Thompson, 18, with second-degree assault. He was held at a county jail.

Trooper Billy Gregory, a spokesman for the Kentucky State Police, said state authorities received a call about the incident Saturday night at the Red Barn Event Center in Columbia, Ky. The event center is a large reception hall rented out for parties.

Meyer was at the center for a celebration of the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer national championship when the alleged assault occurred, CNN said.

President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Meyer in September 2011 for running five times into enemy gunfire to save 36 men and retrieve the bodies of four fallen service members in 2009, the Stars and Stripes reported.
