PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A judge approved a settlement Thursday of a lawsuit by the family of a Chinese national who died after incarceration in a Rhode Island detention center.

Hiu Lui "Jason" Ng, 34, died of liver cancer in 2008. In their lawsuit, his family said Ng was mistreated at the privately owned Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls while he was suffering from terminal cancer and a broken spine.

The cancer was only diagnosed shortly before Ng's death. He was being held on a deportation order.

Under the settlement, the family will receive several million dollars, the Providence Journal reported. The exact amount was not released.

The detention center and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were named as defendants.
