MCALLEN, Texas, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The 14-year-old suspected driver in a police chase and shooting that resulted in the deaths of two stowaway immigrants was arrested in Texas, officials said.

The teenager, a Mexican citizen whose name has not been released, was arrested Friday in McAllen by police who pulled him over in a truck that turned up stolen, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Seven Guatemalans who were riding in the back of the truck also were taken into custody.

He had been wanted since he was mistakenly released from custody after the Oct. 25 chase and shooting.

The teen allegedly led police on a chase that ended when state police fired at his truck from a helicopter, killing two stowaway Guatemalan immigrants. The case has stirred controversy over whether it is appropriate for the Department of Public Safety to allow officers to shoot at vehicles from helicopters.

The teen will remain in juvenile court custody pending a detention hearing, officials said.
