Age 100-plus group nearly 80 pct female

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Census Bureau reported 80 percent of the country's 53,364 people age 100 or older are female.

A special report, "Centenarians 2010," based on the 2010 Census, was released Monday and shows the population age 100 or older represents 2 per 10,000 Americans, only 20.7 percent of whom are male.

The report said 82.5 percent of centenarians are white, compared to 72.4 percent of the general population. Most, 85.4 percent, live in urban areas. The South has 17,444 in the 100-plus population, followed by 12,112 in the Midwest, 12,244 in the Northeast and 10,564 in the West.
