LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A man laid face down on railroad tracks in California's San Fernando Valley and was killed when hit by a train, authorities said.

The man, whose name had not been released, was struck by the train about 4:35 p.m. Thursday, near the Northridge Metrolink station in what authorities characterized as a possible suicide, officer Andrew Santos of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division told the Los Angeles Times.

Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson said the train's 19 passengers were unharmed, but were stuck on the train for about 90 minutes. A bus ultimately shuttled them to the next station, Johnson said.

Trains in both directions were shut down, Johnson said.
