Lugar to teach at U of Indianapolis

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., who exits the Senate next month, is expanding his association with the University of Indianapolis, the school's president says.

University President Robert Manuel told The Indianapolis Star Lugar's agreement to lecture occasionally at the school where he has been on the board of trustees for 32 years will enhance the school's reputation and student learning.

"It's an opportunity to put UIndy on the international stage and to create a classroom experience where students from around the world interact with the issues and topics that have defined American public policy for the past 35 years," Manuel said.

"We couldn't be more pleased that Senator Lugar has selected UIndy as a home for his important post-Senate work. It's difficult to imagine another individual with such a wealth of experience and such a willingness to share it with young people."

Besides teaching, Lugar will assist with a Washington internship and study program, with the school expanding its Lugar Center for Tomorrow's Leaders for high school students into the Richard A. Lugar Academy, the Star said Friday.

Lugar also is exploring the possibility of working with Indiana and Georgetown universities, as well as hook up with a speakers bureau, the newspaper said. In addition, he is expected to become associated with the German Marshall Fund to improve foreign governments' understanding of and relationships with the U.S. government.

Lugar is the most senior Republican in the Senate, but lost his GOP primary this year to Richard Mourdock who in turn lost the general election to Democrat Joe Donnelly.
