STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Dec. 5 (UPI) -- At a faculty meeting, Penn State President Rodney Erickson gave estimates of the school's financial obligations in dealing with the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
Answering a question posed by biology lecturer Jim Strauss at the school's 150-member University Faculty Senate meeting Tuesday, Erickson admitted it will be expensive, the (State College, Pa.) Centre Daily Times reported Wednesday.
"I'm sure we'll look back and say, 'If we hadn't used those funds for particular uses to deal with the fallout of the Sandusky crimes, we would have had enough money to renovate a couple of buildings, some laboratories,'" Erickson noted.
The costs are over $83 million thus far, Erickson said in a quick rundown of expenses, including a $60 million fine by the NCAA, $21 million for legal and public relations expenses and $2.5 million in severance owed to dismissed former university President Graham Spanier.
Addressing another question at the meeting, Erickson noted the Freeh report, commissioned during the investigation of Sandusky, made 119 recommendations for improvement of Penn State's procedures, and the school announced last week it had completed 61 of them.
