CAMDEN, N.J., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A New Jersey mother smoked marijuana and the hallucinogen PCP before decapitating her 2-year-old son and killing herself in August, toxicology reports show.
The Camden County prosecutor's office received the test results Monday, confirming an initial determination that Chevonne Thomas, 33, of Camden was intoxicated when she allegedly used a knife to decapitate her son Zahree before putting his head in a freezer, calling police to report something had happened to him, the Cherry Hill Courier-Post reported Tuesday.
She then stabbed herself to death, The Philadelphia Inquirer said.
Thomas had earlier lost custody of the boy because of drug use and had regained custody just months before his death, a New Jersey Department of Children and Families said in a statement at the time. Zahree had been placed with relatives while Thomas sought "court-ordered treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders."
The crime shocked the city of Camden and cast questions on the state agency's involvement with Thomas, the Courier-Post said.
