MAUI, Hawaii, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A 61-year-old Oregon man was recovering after being attacked by a shark in waters off Maui, Hawaii, officials said.
Thomas Kennedy of Lake Oswego was snorkeling near Kalama Beach Park in Kihei Friday morning when he was bitten on the leg by a shark, KHON-TV, Honolulu, reported.
"I started swimming as fast as I could. ... Obviously, I wanted to get out of the water. I kept watching behind; I was concerned it would come back again," Kennedy told The Maui News.
Maui Fire Department officials said an 8- to 10-foot tiger shark was spotted in the area about the time of the attack.
Construction crew members who had been working in a nearby house called 911, the News reported.
First responders arrived quickly after the 9:40 a.m. attack, Kennedy said.
Kennedy suffered multiple lacerations to his lower left leg and thigh. He is expected to make a full recovery.
