HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A bus hit a house in a New York suburb late Tuesday, killing a 5-year-old boy, police said.

Nine passengers on the bus were hurt, WNBC-TV reported.

Police in Hempstead on Long Island said the driver of the N70 Nassau Inter-County bus was trying to keep from hitting a pedestrian when the crash occurred at 9:45 p.m. The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital after he was trapped under the bus when it crashed into the front room of the house.

At least 15 people were on the bus with nine seriously enough hurt to be taken to hospitals for examination or treatment.

The crash is being investigated by police and by the bus company.
