Boston mayor has Type 2 diabetes

BOSTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has type 2 diabetes and expects to become an advocate for fellow sufferers, doctors and officials say.

Monday's announcement of the mayor's condition came at the end of a monthlong hospital stay for other conditions, the Boston Herald reported.

Menino, 69, was released Monday from Brigham and Women's Hospital. He had cut short an Italian vacation in October because of a viral infection. While in the hospital, Menino also was treated for a blood clot in his lung and a fractured vertebra.

Dr. Charles Morris, Menino's doctor, said the mayor's diabetes may have contributed to the infection.

Menino's spokeswoman, Dot Joyce, said that while the mayor was "concerned" about having diabetes, "he's thinking what a great advocate he can be for the cause."

She said he was "very eager" to get back to dealing with the city's business.
