TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A suspected drunken driver was arrested after she allegedly hit a man, then drove 2 miles with the victim, who later died, still on her car's hood, police said.
Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 51, of Torrance allegedly hit Phillip Moreno, 31, at 11:25 p.m. Saturday as Moreno was walking home from a bar, The (Torrance) Daily Breeze reported.
Police said Wilkins panicked and continued to drive until concerned citizens swarmed her car and told her to stop because a man was hanging on the hood.
"He is literally embedded in her hood and into the windshield," Torrance police Sgt. Robert Watt said. "She knew he was somehow embedded into her car but she panicked."
Moreno was able to speak to paramedics but died after he reached a hospital.
Wilkins, who told police she was coming from work, was booked at the Torrance jail on suspicion of drunken driving and manslaughter.
"This is just another tragic reminder that ... fatal crashes can happen if someone is driving while intoxicated," Watt said.
