Couple drown, son missing in Calif. surf

EUREKA, Calif., Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A couple drowned and their 16-year-old son was missing after they tried to save the family dog from heavy surf along a California beach, authorities said.

The Eureka Times-Standard reported the U.S. Coast Guard said the couple's daughter reportedly called in the emergency at Big Lagoon, about 32 miles north of Eureka, Saturday afternoon.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said the unidentified couple's bodies were recovered but the boy was missing. Fog and darkness hampered the search.

KTVU-TV, Oakland, reported state parks officials said the family members tried to save their dog after it got caught in waves 8-10 feet high. The dog made it to shore safely.
