NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Thieves looted at least three New York City homes that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the homeowners say.

The New York Post reported Saturday the homes that were targeted Wednesday and Thursday are in the Breezy Point neighborhood of New York's Queens borough.

The Post said one couple lost a $25,000 coin collection along with jewelry and watches. The wife called it a "terrible violation."

"It's just been one big ordeal," said the woman, who declined to allow her name to be used.

"I'm very uncomfortable. I don't want them coming back here. All I wanted to do was come home."

Her husband said police told him there have been many burglary victims in Breezy Point.

"People aren't here during the week, so when they come back on the weekend, they notice their stuff is gone," he said.

At another home, $400 in two change jars was taken.

"I've been putting my best efforts forward into putting my home back together and staying strong," that homeowner, Robert Bainbridge, 57, said. "This just adds insult to injury.

"It's a total lack of morals and ethics on their part.Whoever did this is not thinking, 'This could happen to me.'"

At a third home, a laptop computer and jewelry were taken.

The Post said there were 14 home break-ins in Breezy Point from Nov. 12-18, compared with none a year before. In the 28 days before that, there were 48 burglaries compared with four in the same period the year before.

Sandy hit New York Oct. 29.
