Man acquitted of rape to pay $200,000

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- An Oregon man acquitted of raping a woman with dementia at her assisted-living home has agreed to pay $200,000 to her family to settle a civil lawsuit.

Doug Cathcart was accused but acquitted of attacking Ruth DeLong Black at her assisted-living home three years ago, The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

Cathcart, however, admitted to lying about what happened and signed an admission that he "committed one or more acts" alleged in the Black family's $2.5 million lawsuit against him, though he doesn't specify which acts.

"We can say he is a person who lied and takes sexual advantage of a vulnerable person, and we can say that out loud," said John Campbell of Portland, Black's brother-in-law.

Cathcart has not commented on the legal proceedings.
