MARLOW, Ala., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- One Baldwin County, Ala., sheriff's deputy was killed, another was wounded and a gunman died in a shootout after a report of a family disturbance, police said.

Deputy Scott Ward, 47, and two other deputies were responding to the complaint at a home near Marlow, Ala., about 4 p.m. Friday when a man identified as Michael Jansen started shooting at the officers with a handgun. The deputies returned fire, killing Jansen, al.com reported.

Ward -- a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's department and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve who was deployed to Afghanistan a year ago -- was flown by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The other wounded deputy was listed in serious condition at the same hospital.

Sheriff Huey Mack said all three deputies were wearing bullet-resistant vests and had followed proper procedure.

The names of the wounded deputy and the third deputy, who was not injured, were not released.
