Midwest stays cold, East Coast warms up

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Cold weather struck the U.S. Midwest, interrupting holiday shopping plans, although the chilly morning gave way to higher temperatures on the East Coast.

The day began with temperatures in the 20s in Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Oklahoma City, with blustery winds all day, making temperatures feel lower, weather forecasting service Accuweather reported.

An overnight storm left up to 3 inches of snow and led to wet and slippery conditions across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Friday.

From Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday, the Minnesota State Patrol reported 186 crashes on state roads, including 45 rollovers and 27 injuries. Another 244 cars slid into ditches and needed to be pulled out.

In northern Minnesota, the town of Finland reported 10 inches of snow and in neighboring Wisconsin, a foot fell in Herbster, Hawthorne and Cornucopia, while Oulu got 11.

Temperatures in the 50s were reported in the afternoon in Boston and New York, and in the 60s in Baltimore and Washington, Accuweather said.
