SOUTH BEND, Wash., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A Washington state teen was sentenced to 31 years in prison for killing his father.
Devon R. Moore, 18, was given the sentence by Pacific County District Court Judge Michael Sullivan. Following his prison term, Moore will serve three years of community service, Sullivan's Nov. 15 sentence determined, The Daily News of Longview, Wash., reported Wednesday.
Moore pleaded guilty in October to shooting his father four times as he slept after the two quarreled over Moore's grades. Moore's father, Timothy Moore, said his son could have car privileges so long as he maintained a grade point average on the honor roll. When the younger Moore's grades slipped, the elder Moore revoked his driving right, the report said.
After the dispute, Moore waited until his father was asleep and got a bolt-action .22-caliber gun kept in a spare room and shot his father four times in the head in their South Bend, Wash., home, police said. He then took his father's body to a remote area and buried it in a shallow grave. He told his mother, who did not live with them, and friends his father had gone missing.
Hunters discovered the elder Moore's remains five months later and the younger Moore admitted to police he'd killed his father and covered up the act.
"Devon Moore ultimately engaged in a totally selfish act with no regard to the pain that he inflicted on Timothy Moore's family and friends," prosecutors wrote in court filings.
