DETROIT, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- FBI agents raided the Detroit Public Library, seizing records in an investigation of contracts for computer work.
Sources told The Detroit News the target of the investigation appears to be Tim Cromer, the library's chief administrative officer. A source said his house in West Bloomfield was also searched.
Jonathan Kinloch, president of the Detroit Library Commission, told the Detroit Free Press the FBI is looking into two contracts with a total value of about $2 million. Both eventually involved large cost overruns.
"There may be an individual who awarded contracts for personal gain. And if that is the case, it is a total violation of the public trust," Kinloch said.
There have been previous allegations of poor spending at the library. Recently, officials bought chairs and wastebaskets that cost $1,000 each during a renovation of one wing of the main library at a time when employees were being laid off.
