Black family flees home after vandalism

YORBA LINDA, Calif., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A black law enforcement couple say they and their children fled their upscale Orange County, Calif., community after enduring vandalism and racial taunts.

Rocked were thrown through the windows of their Yorba Linda home, their car's tires were slashed, corrosive acid pellets shot into the garage damaged the car and racial taunts were shouted by passing motorists, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

The family, which was not identified, moved to Corona and reported the alleged hate crimes to the Orange County Human Relations Commission.

"It just illustrates that even amid our really wonderful community, life is different for some people," commission Executive Director Rusty Kennedy said.

The father of the family is an Inglewood police officer and his wife is a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy. They have two children, the newspaper said.

They had moved to Yorba Linda, a city of 65,000 where African-Americans make up only 1 percent of the population, in 2011, U.S. Census Bureau statistics indicate.
