SACRAMENTO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Calif., Friday conceded defeat to Democratic challenger Ami Bera in the state's 7th Congressional District.

Lungren, 66, had defeated Bera in 2010, when he won re-election to his fourth term representing the Sacramento-area district. Before that, Lungren had represented a Southern California district in Congress for five terms in the 1970s and '80s, had served two four-year terms as California attorney general, and was the Republican nominee for governor in 1998, losing to Democratic nominee Gray Davis.

"I am satisfied that enough votes have been counted to determine that I will not be representing the citizens of the 7th Congressional District during the 113th Congress," Lungren said in a statement. "It was a tough campaign and I accept the outcome."

The concession came on the same day as incumbent Republican Rep. Brian Bilbray conceded defeat to his Democratic challenger, Scott Peters, in the state's 52nd District.
