NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The United Nations called on the Sudanese government to finally stop the violence plaguing Darfur and acknowledge it's a "dead end."

U.N. Acting Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator Aichatou Mindaoudou noted an armed conflict between forces loyal to the Sudanese government and an unidentified armed militia Friday near the village of Shangil Tobaya, in North Darfur. She called it "part of a larger pattern of conflict in the area in recent months."

Mindaoudou went on to say such fighting is "a dead end that only harms the people of Darfur."

Peacekeepers were called to the village to treat and transfer wounded soldiers to a hospital in El Fasher, the capital of the Northern Darfur state, the United Nations said.
